The number one and two ranked high school girls swept the first two spots at the Pan American Junior Championships on Friday with LSU freshman Karen Henning taking the final spot on the podium. After some rain delays, high School record holder Shelby Ashe (St. Pius X, Atlanta, GA) struggled through the first few rounds and found herself in just third place entering the finals. However, she took the lead on her fourth attempt and then improved to 59.25m (194-05) on her last attempt to secure gold. Daina Levy (Kennesaw Mountain, Kennesaw, GA), Ashe's training partner and teammate with the Throw1Deep throwing club, took second place for Jamaica with a throw of 55.79m (183-00). Henning's best was 54.18m (177-09). The Pan American Championships showcases up to two junior (under-20) throwers per country from the Carribean, North America, Central America, and South America. The meet will run through Sunday, when the junior men's final will take place.
